This 145-year-old Castle Street flat in Dunedin was selected by Aero Solutions as a demonstration of how airtightness can improve the performance of existing New Zealand homes without the cost and disruption of a major renovation. Aero used its air sealing solution to target hidden gaps and draughts throughout the building, reducing air leakage from around 16 air changes per hour to under two. Representatives from the New Zealand Green Building Council attended to observe the demonstration and see the results first-hand.

The project was also featured on TVNZ’s BNZ Business Breakfast, highlighting the wider issue that New Zealand has no mandatory airtightness standard for homes. Airtightness works alongside controlled ventilation to create a healthier indoor environment. Houses and people both need a constant supply of fresh air, not only when a window happens to be open. By combining airtightness with ventilation, fresh air can be introduced continuously and in a controlled way, 24/7, while reducing uncontrolled draughts and helping the home retain heat.
