AeroBarrier Process & Results

AeroBarrier airsealing is a simple process providing reliable, certified results without disrupting the construction timelines

Airsealing made simple with AeroBarrier

AeroBarrier is a fast, automated airsealing solution that seals gaps and cracks in walls, ceilings, and floors, achieving target airtightness levels in a matter of hours.

Results are reliable because we just keep going until the required airtightness is reached. AeroBarrier is simple, fast, and cost-effective. It fits into standard residential construction systems  which have been built with airtightness in mind.

The AeroBarrier system makes airtightness simple, from individual homes to large residential developments and renovations.

“The air sealing speed was a big benefit. It was done post-GIB installation, so you can have a normal construction methodology — no special tapes or barriers or installation methods required.”

Nick Allan, Builder and Director, Nuline

Air Sealing Results in Four Easy Steps

1.

AeroBarrier Preparation

The Aero team will prep the area by covering any openings that won’t be sealed. This includes taping or covering any designed openings or finished horizontal surfaces within the space. Spray stations are then set up throughout the building envelope to be air sealed.

The AeroBarrier system is then set up. It includes a blower door, nozzle stations and hoses, a fan with large flexible plastic tubing, and the master control unit.
Preparation
2.
Pressurise & Apply AeroBarrier
Using a blower door, the space is pressurised. After that, Aero’s specialised computer programme controls the entire process including monitoring the temperature, pressure, humidity, and distribution of non-toxic water-based sealant within the space.
3.
Seal & Monitor
With the AeroBarrier system you can set the target airtightness and you see results in real-time during the seal process. At the end of the process, a final blower door test is run to verify the air sealing results. AeroBarrier then provides a Certificate of Completion that shows pre and post leakage.
4.
Clean Up & Test Certificate
After the air sealing is complete, work can resume in the space within 30 minutes. At that time, clean-up of all equipment and removal of all tape and coverings can occur. A certificate confirms the level of airtightness actually achieved. No guesswork or fingers crossed.

When to air seal?

For new builds

AeroBarrier is typically installed once:
  • Plasterboard is fixed and stopped
  • Before painting
  • Architraves and skirtings may or may not have been installed
  • Flushboxes are fitted
  • Usually before downlight cut outs have been made

The process is the same but more set up time is required if there are carpets, furniture and cabinetry etc to cover.

In practice, the stage of installation can be varied for both new builds and renovations. It won’t affect the outcome but may affect the setting up process which could be reflected in the cost.

AeroBarrier delivers reliable results from a specialist installer

Historically, air sealing has been an unreliable, inconsistent guessing game with many hands involved. A lot of trust is placed in multiple subcontractors to do their part.  Unfortunately, failing an initial blower door test requires extra labour, hold times, testing fees, schedule conflicts, and more – all of which is money out of your pocket.  AeroBarrier’s precise, measurable results remove the guesswork and headache of uncertainty when it comes to meeting any air sealing requirement.

Control Air Sealing at Your Fingertips

The AeroBarrier air sealing system uses verified software that accounts for the build’s many variables, such as square metreage, number of windows, doors, and bathrooms.

The software combines with an industry standard blower door, which meets ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) standards, to deliver measurable results.

Our software was built to create the highest level of accuracy in your air sealing report.

With AeroBarrier, there’s no question of whether or not you pass inspection. The system updates every 90 seconds and tracks in both ACH50 and (L/s (litres per second) to accommodate different air requirements

Results You Can See

Confidently leave the job site when finished. Upon completion, the AeroBarrier air sealing system automatically provides you with an air sealing certificate. This certificate includes data to assist with final inspections, including:
  • Initial air leakage
  • A graph showing air leakage reduction over time;
  • Total amount of time for the air sealing process;
  • Final air leakage after the sealing is complete with a percent of change comparing before and after airtightness.

Our certificate provides you with the satisfaction and confidence of knowing that you met your requirement. No other air sealing method out there can provide this reliability.

NZGBC accepts the AeroBarrier certificate as part of the Homestar certification process
